It can be challenging coming from a tough and toxic family.

I know that I have learned a lot from being around these human beings all of my life, but at the same time I am so tired of their shenanigans.

There is no way to have a conversation with my family members without them down playing your experience and commenting on their own unique brand of suffering or survival. They always have it worse, and you are always incorrect for voicing your unhappiness. This is even the case when it comes to indisputable facts. For instance, when they call me in the dead of Summer from their Northern latitude and tell me that the outdoor air temperature is too miserable to survive. They try to tell me that the outdoor heat and humidity is so oppressive that they don’t know how to exist anymore. They are afraid that their central cooling system is going to break down any day, if the energy bills don’t cripple them first. I hear about their air quality issues in the hot and muggy summer season every single year. They are always catastrophizing what could go wrong with their heating and cooling systems and telling me that I am lucky to have a much easier existence. The fact is, I live in the Deep South where the air temperature is undoubtedly hotter and my reliance on air conditioning is far more significant. Whenever I try to counter their complaints with indisputable data about my current outdoor climate, they just tell me to stop whining.
