It took almost a full year of work, but this old grain silo is finally fit for habitation! It started as a project, but then grew into an obsession.

My family has a series of grain silos on the farm land, and they haven’t been used in 20 years but are still very strong and sturdy.

I wanted to convert one into a modern house, using the structure of the silo and modifying the interior drastically. I did almost all of the work myself, but needed outside help for the finishing touches. Now that the HVAC contractor has finished with my ventilation system, and the climate controls, I can finally move in. The floors and walls have been done for weeks, but the potential problem with a place like this is the air quality. Grain silos can be very dangerous, as the gases released over time by decomposing grain can be explosive, so my ventilation system needed to be top notch. Even though the place had been empty for decades and totally remodeled, old grain dust in the ventilation system could be very bad for me. I had a local HVAC contractor come in, test the air, and refit the place with a terrific system for temperature control and air purity. Just to be safe I booked the same company to come back and test the air quality and the system again in two months. If it passes the tests at that point, I will rest easier with my air quality going forward, and schedule regular HVAC inspections every six months.
