When we were kids, my mom was extremely strict. She was a really good parent and she wanted the best for her kids, so she didn’t necessarily give us everything that we wanted. We had to work for things and we were told “no” pretty often. She also liked to control our diets and make sure that we were eating healthily. One of the things that she didn’t allow us to have was refined sugar. This meant, there were no sugary cereals or sodas in our house, let alone candies. Unfortunately, this backfired and made us sugar fiends whenever we got our hands on it. She still tells us the story about the HVAC company and our dedication to breaking the heating and cooling system every time she turned around, all thanks to a lollipop. Apparently, there was a random summer day when our air conditioning system wouldn’t turn on. No matter what she tried, my mom couldn’t get the thermostat to convince our cooling system that it should operate. Without cool air streaming through the air vents her kids were starting to get pretty pissy, so she called a local HVAC company for help. During this time, all three of us children were getting more and more upset. So, whenever the HVAC tech arrived, she handed us each a lollipop to keep us happy and occupied while he performed the repair service. Sugar really must be like crack to kids. For years after that fateful HVAC repair, we were obsessed with trying to break the air quality control system so we could earn another sucker.
