As I sit here addressing you, my beloved reader, I have discovered a basic truth.

  • If it is too cold, I simply cannot work! I remember one time when I was in school, we did this thing called values clarification.

In that program, we were asked questions and we were to decide the best answers to the questions. I remember one question was something like “What is most important to you?” and the answer choices were “helping people,” “getting rich,” and “being comfortable.” I was the only one who chose “being comfortable.” I figured I had the wrong answer, but the next day, the teacher shut off the air conditioning. The room was hot, like a furnace really, and everyone was miserable. They refused to do their work, and the companined endlessly. They begged her to call the maintenance man about the a/c but she refused. Then she asked, so now that you have njo a/c, do you still think that the most important thing to you is helping others? Mother Theresa’s purpose was to help others. She gave up the heating and cooling in the house. She took up the carpet in the house. She even removed the water heater from the house. But I am no Mother Theresa and neither were my classmates. When we had to do without a/c for even a little while, we became whiny brats. NOw that I am grown and it is 40 degrees outside and my fingers hurt when I type, I know that I want to be comfortable more than I was to help people. I need my heater if I am going to be able to write my articles!
