When I was growing up, my father was in the Army so we moved around a lot and always lived in different homes.

It seemed like we never stayed in a single place for more than a year.

Every base was different and so were the houses we lived in. Most of the time, we just lived in base housing because it was easier that way. But, some bases had nice houses. Other houses were infested with mold as well as bugs and they were falling apart. Another thing that I found interesting was the Heating and Air Conditioning systems in all of the different houses. Every one of them had central heating and cooling. However, how well this heating and cooling was, was a total crap shoot. Some houses had new Heating and Air Conditioning systems that were maintained regularly and they worked well. Those were a rarity though. In most cases, the Heating and Air Conditioning systems were ancient. There was a lot of dust in the ductwork, and they broke down from time to time. I remember this one new home where the oil furnace didn’t work. It only was lukewarm no matter how high you set the thermostat. In another new home, the A/C broke down 6 times in just under 2 years. Each time it broke down we had to wait over a month before it was fixed. Then there were the thermostats. We had a dial thermostat or an analog thermostat. No thermostat was like another. 74 degrees in a single new home was a much different temperature than 74 degrees in another house. I don’t know if that is because the thermostats weren’t calibrated or if it had to do with the design of the house. Either way, these home HVAC systems definitely needed to all be inspected and repaired so they worked alike.
